A little of the history of the Igatu Village

Igatu, formerly called Xique-xique of Igatu is a small district of the city of Andarai, Bahia. located in the Sierra de Sincorá, between the towns of Andaraí and Mucugê. It has today about 300 inhabitants.

The Igatu village had its peak between the years 1940 and 1950. It is estimated that 10,000 people lived in the village and its surroundings at the time. With the decline of diamonds and consequent migration of the locals, the village almost turned ghost town. We can not fail to mention that the residents themselves, in despair of finding diamonds, tore down their homes and even entire streets behind this little ore.
