For those unaware : The village of Igatu at the time the mining of diamonds, had a population of more than ten thousand inhabitants. Today there are just over 300 people.

That golden age , left only ruins of houses and buildings made , for the most part , by slaves . Everywhere you go, there's old building or piece of it . The Royal Road which connects the village to the Mucugê municipality is an example.  

 

In this post , I will show the region of Igatu more ruins : the neighborhood Luis dos Santos.  

 

► How to Get There :   Leaving the Igatu Center Square.   >

 

 Just ask , to anyone , where is the Church of San Sebastian or the art gallery and Memory. Everyone knows. From there , just follow the trail that leads to Andaraí and ready . It takes no more than 15 minutes. It's an easy way but downhill a bit steep and without shade.

Waterfall of Small Seats in Igatu Village

► How to Get:

 

First, you have to pick up the black of the street and keep walking (uphill) to the bridge over the River Pigeon. It takes about 15 minutes only.

 

Starting from the main square, the yellow arrow indicates the street of blacks

► Now you leave the track and picks up the riverbed of the pigeons up to the falls .
     It has no signage.
     Stay in the left margin.

A little of the history of the Igatu Village

Igatu, formerly called Xique-xique of Igatu is a small district of the city of Andarai, Bahia. located in the Sierra de Sincorá, between the towns of Andaraí and Mucugê. It has today about 300 inhabitants.

 

Curiosity: Igatu means "good water" in Tupi Garani.

 

The Igatu village had its peak between the years 1940 and 1950. It is estimated that 10,000 people lived in the village and its surroundings at the time. With the decline of diamonds and consequent migration of the locals, the village almost turned ghost town. We can not fail to mention that the residents themselves, in despair of finding diamonds, tore down their homes and even entire streets behind this little ore. Are still today the ruins of several houses located in what was once a neighborhood called St. Louis.

 

From the 90s, tourism has emerged in the region and has become a development factor for most residents. Some residents make their living working as a guide, taking tourists to rivers and waterfalls; Others work in hotels, restaurants and / or making crafts. Either way, it's hard fact that tourism has revolutionized the region of Chapada Diamantina, providing new opportunities for development.

 

The question now is sustainability therefore already begun the destruction of flora and fauna by tourists. Every year increases the number of visitors the old and charming village of Igatu. Last year, in celebration of St. John, did not fit space for so many cars that came to town.
